Bayern Munich clinch 11th consecutive Borussia Dortmund squandered a golden opportunity to become Bundesliga champions and replace Bayern Munich’s reign as title holders for decades, drawing 2-2 at home to Mainz as Bayern produced one of the most thrilling of recent seasons. And with just over a minute left in regulation time, Dortmund were indeed poised to become champions. Although trailing 2-1 in their own game against Mainz, Bayern scored an 81st-minute equalizer against Cologne to move Dortmund a point clear in the table.
As news of Colin’s goal filtered into Signal Iduna Park, the crowd was momentarily elated, as fans cheered and hugged each other. After all, there were just nine minutes of regulation time left as every drum beat echoed around the stadium as Dortmund moved within a second of a first title since 2012.
But the fans’ temporary joy was short-lived, squashed eight minutes later when Jamal Musilla restored Bayern’s lead in the 89th minute.
There were five minutes of injury time left and one more substitution time remaining. Nicklas Sule’s goal made it 2-2 in the last possible minute and Dortmund continued to press.
